term definitions || SOME TEXT IS ABT BROWN BEARS BC CODING CLASS
The concept of 'Black alterity' (defined by the conditions of being Black & existing in some form alternative--more on this later) & how that manifests in alternative music is one that i plan to explore and discuss throughout this project, as it is something i am already unclear about myself.
there are many ways to define alterity, what that state of being alternative is in relation to, and the problems/questions this raises. but first, what is 'Blackness'?
some things that are crucial to understand the development of Blackness, or the Black identity, as it is discussed in this project and in modern discourse:
- 'Double Conciousness': a term that must always be discussed in ideas of embodying Black identity, or what we have come to know and describe as Black identity, 'double conciousness' was coined by W.E.B DuBois to describe the unique way that the Black American moves through the world, existing in a state of 'two-ness' where there needs to be some mediation betwwen being a Negro and being an American. these were - and often still are - very different positions to occupy, both within the country and on the global stage.
